Slade started to back away, but Hatch suddenly exclaimed, "Hey, Red. Come take a look at this."

At that moment, Speck turned and spotted Slade.

Leaping forward on the soundless soles of his leather moccasins, the wiry half-breed cold-cocked the slight cowpoke with the muzzle of his Colt. He grabbed the unconscious outlaw before he hit the floor and hastily dragged him to the opening in the floor and slid him feet first to the tunnel below.

From the dining area, a voice called out, "What was that? Hey, Speck. You find something?"

Glancing over his shoulder, Slade dropped through the hole and quickly closed the door.

He cocked his Colt and waited.

In the faint light given off by the flickering candle, Slade saw that Speck was still unconscious. He grinned to himself as his gray eyes shifted to the door just above his head.

Footsteps and puzzled voices came from above. He heard the clomp of boots in the closet, but the trapdoor was in the shadows to one side of the door. The only way it could be spotted was by lantern light.

"Where in the hell did he go?" Hatch growled.

"Look out back."

"He didn t go out that way. The lock bar is down on the door." Hatch paused. When he spoke, his voice had a quiver in it. "The only way out is the front door, and we was up there. We would have seen him. No. He-he just vanished."

"Don't be crazy," Red snapped. "Nobody vanishes."

"So what happened? You know so much, where'd Speck go?"
